When Jesus was born three wise men followed a star to reach his place of birth. Seeing the new-born babe they bowed to the divine child in their hearts. One sage told Mary: "He loves God." The second sage said: "God loves him." The third man said: "He is God." What is the inner significance of these three pronouncements about Jesus? The first statement implies that Jesus is a messenger of God. A messenger may love his master, but the master may not so easily love his messenger. The second statement implies that he is the son of God, for a father loves his son most dearly. The third statement proclaims the unity of the Father and Son. It means that as the Son of God he is entitled to ascend to his Father's place.

We should do our might to enhance the reputation of our country, its culture, and language. But, let not that pride lead you to dislike other languages and cultures. The languages by which thoughts are expressed may be varied, but the thoughts, emotions and feelings are the same. The language of the heart is the same, but when it comes to the tongue, it may take various forms.

Education has to cultivate humility and discipline; but today it is yielding a harvest of pride and envy. ‘Vidya’ means: ‘vid’ (Light) and ‘ya’ (that which gives). So education has to shed light and illumine the darkness in the mind and the intellect. It does not indicate mere bookish knowledge. It has to clarify the kinship of man with man and his intimate relationship with nature. It must harmonize one's earlier experiences with one's present ones, and guide one to profitable and beneficial experiences in the future. It must validate the knowledge gained from these books by these experiences and in the process make man grow, until he becomes Divine.
-BABA
A time honoured proverb says "Na Sukhaath Labhyathe Sukham" - Real and lasting happiness cannot be won through physical pleasures. Lasting happiness can come only by the discipline of the mind and faith in the Lord which cannot be diminished by good or bad fortune. Man has to use the power of discrimination given to him to fight the evil forces within him and to foster the Divine elements in him by his own effort, by listening to the voice of his conscience. Man has to use the freedom to discriminate between right and wrong, good and evil.
-BABA
The Atma is unaffected by any subject or object. Even if the senses, mind, intelligence are inactive, that will not affect the Atma. They have nothing to do with the Atma, which you really are. To know the Atma as such an entity, unaffected and unattached is the secret of Jnana (wisdom). Man is fundamentally happy and healthy. His nature is joy. So when he is happy and healthy, no one is surprised or worried. But, grief and sorrow are strange to his make-up. They are the result of a delusion that has overwhelmed his nature. So people get worried and set about finding out how he got so deluded.
-BABA
You must practice moderation in food, sleep and exercise. Good food taken in moderate quantities at regular intervals; that is the prescription. Sathwic food promotes self-control and intelligence more than Rajasic and Tamasic. Sleep too, must be regulated and moderated; it is as important as work and food. The food must be clean and pure and derived through pure means, and the strength derived from it must be directed towards holy ends.
-BABA
Life is a mosaic of pleasure and pain - grief is an interval between two moments of joy. Peace is the interlude between two wars. You have no rose without a thorn; the diligent picker will avoid the pricks and gather the flowers. There is no bee without the sting; cleverness consists in gathering the honey nevertheless. Troubles and travails will haunt you. But you must not allow them to deflect you from the path of duty and dedication. The world today is afflicted with anxiety, fear, depression, hatred, greed and suspicion. The only way the world can be set right is for man to realise his high destiny; for every man yearns for two boons - attainment of joy and escape from sorrow.
-BABA
Life sustained by food is short; life sustained by the Atma is eternal. Do not lay claim to long life; but to Divine life. Do not pine for more years on earth, but for more virtues in the heart. The Buddha knew and made known to the world, the Truth. Everything is grief. Everything is empty. Everything is ephemeral and polluted. So the wise man has to do the duties assigned to him with discrimination, diligence and detachment. Play the role but keep your identity unaffected.
-BABA
Man will never gain happiness by giving a free rein to his senses. Man allows the mind - mere bundle of thoughts and desires - to guide his actions, instead of the intellect, which can discriminate, probe and analyse. While the mind will follow blindly every whim and fancy, the intellect helps man to identify one's duty and responsibility. Two things are essential for happy life: Dhaanya and Dhyana- Dhaanya or grains for sustenance of the body and Dhyana or contemplation of the Lord and merging in His glory.
-BABA
You are all endowed with Viveka (discrimination), you have a conscience whispering Dharma (righteousness) into your ear; so you are to select and choose yourself. Polish your mind and the sublime grandeur of the Lord will be reflected in your heart. Just as you feed the body and care for its upkeep and maintenance, the Chitta (consciousness), the Buddhi (intellect) have also to be fed with good nourishing food. If you don't, then they will be hungry and run after all kinds of foul food. Give them proper nourishment and they will function well, which is to illumine the Atma and help you realize that the Atma is in all.
-BABA
If a man wishes to be happy, the first exercise he must do is to remove from his mind every bad thought, feeling and habit. Grief and joy are obverse and reverse sides of the same experience. Joy is when grief ends; grief is when joy ends. What exactly is grief? It is merely a reaction to the loss of something gained or the failure to gain something desired. Therefore, the only way to escape grief and sorrow is to conquer desire for the illusory. The secret of happiness is not in doing what one likes but in liking what one has to do. Whatever work you have to do, you should do it with pleasure and liking.

Sorrows and disasters are the clouds that flit across the sky; they cannot injure the blue depths of space of faith. Look upon joy and sorrow as teachers of hardihood and balance. Grief is a friendly reminder, a good taskmaster, even a better teacher than joy. Do not flinch in the face of grief. Welcome the test because thereafter you are awarded the certificate. It is to measure your progress that tests are imposed.
-BABA
Those who seek to impart the values of Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Righteousness), Shanti (Peace), Prema (Love) and Ahimsa (Non-violence) to others, must try first to practise them themselves whole-heartedly. To imagine that values can be installed by teaching is a mistake. Such learning will have no permanent effect. Educationists must take note of this fact. If transformation is to be effected in students, the process must start from a very early age.
-BABA
So long as man lives a life devoted to objective pleasures and objective victories, he cannot escape sorrow, fear and anxiety. There is no object without fault or failing; there is no pleasure that is unmixed with pain; there is no act that is not tainted with egoism. So be pure and develop detachment, which will save you from grief. The sorrows of life cannot be ended through hatred and injustice; these will only breed more of the same species. The sorrows will yield only to nobler and higher thoughts and experiences germinating from the pure heart, where the Lord resides.

Everything is constantly changing in the world. This ever-changing world is based upon the unchanging Divine. It is only when the Aadhaara (Divine basis) is understood can one derive bliss from the experience of what is based on it. In whatever action men do and whatever paths they pursue, they should be conscious of the Divine. The chief source of Ananda (bliss) is dedication to God; nothing else can give that genuine and lasting joy. Become conscious of your kinship with the Lord. That kinship is not a mere fancy or a faked theory. It has come down since ages, from the beginning of time itself. It will persist till the very end of time.
-BABA
Delusion causes evil feelings to arise in your heart and mind. One may be evil-minded, yet with the blessings of elders and in the company of noble souls, one can easily get rid of evil tendencies and develop virtues. People undertake various spiritual practices to attain divinity. Thyaja Durjana Samsargam; Bhaja Sadhu Samagamam; Kuru Punyam Ahorathram; Smara Nityam Anityatham (Shun bad company; seek good company, perform righteous deeds always and discriminate between the permanent and the ephemeral).
-BABA
Creation has to be viewed as a Cosmic Stage. God is the director and dramatis personae in this play. He assigns all the roles of the characters in the play. All creatures in the world are manifestations of the Divine. The good and evil in the world are expressions of the Divine consciousness. Man should not be misled by these expressions. Behind all the various actions of the actors, the Divine director is at work. It should be realised that though names and forms may vary, languages and nationalities may be different, the human race is one in its divine essence.
-BABA
You must become like the flute in the Lord's hands. Let the breath of the Lord pass through you, producing delightful music that melts the hearts of everyone. Surrender yourself to Him; become hollow, i.e., egoless; then He will Himself come and pick you up caressingly and apply you, the flute, to His lips and blow His sweet breath through you. Allow Him to play whatever song He likes.
-BABA
Man has to understand that he is the cause of his own happiness or misery, and that all he seeks or loves are not for their sake, but for his own sake. Hence, he has to understand by deep inquiry his own true nature. Realising the ephemeral nature of all worldly objects, man should recognise that enduring happiness can be got only by developing love for God. I do not condemn worldly happiness. I feel glad when people are happy. But, please do not believe that this happiness is permanent.
-BABA
If we sow a thought today, we reap an act tomorrow. If we sow an act today, we reap a habit tomorrow. If we sow a habit today, we reap a character tomorrow. If we sow a character today, we reap a destiny tomorrow. You do not lose much if a finger is so damaged that it needs to be cut off. The body can still function and be a fit instrument. Even if you lose a limb, you can function and benefit with the help of your other faculties. But if you lose your character, then everything is lost. The crisis of character which is at the root of all the troubles everywhere, has come about as a result of the neglect of this aspect of education. Wisdom thrives when man is afraid of vice and sin and is attached to the Divine.
-BABA
There is in everyone a spark of Truth; no one can live without that spark. There is in everyone a flame of Love; life becomes a dark void without it. That spark, that flame is God, for He is the source of all Truth and all Love. Man seeks the Truth; he seeks to know the reality because his very nature is derived from God who is Truth. He seeks Love, to give it and share it, for his nature is God and God is Love.
-BABA
The secret of peace lies in service and love towards all beings. The best form of service is to promote the growth of sages and seekers who are the practitioners of the good life. Do not speak disparagingly of the servants of God; do not obstruct the charity of the generous; do not discourage the study of the scriptures even if you cannot promote any of them.
-BABA
Gratitude is a supreme virtue. Ingratitude is a grievous sin. There is no means of atonement for the ungrateful person. A man without this supreme virtue of gratitude is worse than a cruel animal. Having received his wealth, education and skills from society, if he does not serve the cause of society, his wealth, education and skills are but a sheer waste. Man is a creature of society and owes everything to society. If you wish to safeguard your future, you have to be grateful to those who have helped you in your difficult times and enabled you to obtain your personal needs.
-BABA
Moral and spiritual values have to be honoured as much as, if not more than, economic and material values. Life must be a harmonious blend of these values with emphasis on moral strength. The honour of a nation depends on the morality of that nation. A nation without morality will be doomed. Morality has to be grown in the heart by feeding it with love. Then only can we have justice, security, law and order. If love declines among the people, nations will weaken and mankind will perish.
-BABA
When man thinks, speaks and acts along virtuous lines, his conscience will be clean and he will have peace. Whoever subdues his egoism, conquers his selfish desires, destroys his bestial feelings and impulses and gives up the natural tendency to regard the body as self, is surely on the path of Dharma. He knows that the goal of Dharma is the merging of the wave in the sea; the merging of the self in the Higher self.

Wealth, education, social status, etc. are of no avail without character. Character is like the fragrance of the flower; it gives value and worth. Poets, painters, artists and scientists may each be great in their own field, but without character they can have no true standing. One may wonder whether all those who are now treated with respect by society have a character that entitles them to being considered great, but society is subject to fashions that vary from day to day. The basic nature of a flawless character is eternal, and remains the same whatever the vicissitudes of society. Among the qualities that make up a flawless character are love, patience, forbearance, steadfastness, charity – these are the highest, these have to be revered.
Man is a part of the human community. Mankind is a part of nature. Nature is a limb of God. Man has not recognised these inter-relationships. Today men are forgetting their obligations. The Cosmos is an integral organism of interrelated parts. When each one performs his duty, the benefits are available to all. Man is entitled only to perform his duties and not to the fruits thereof. Man is a kind of stage-director of what goes on in Nature. But forgetting his responsibilities, man fights for rights. It is foolish to fight for rights without discharging one's duties. All the chaos and conflicts in the world are due to men forgetting their duties. If everyone discharge their duties diligently, the world will be peaceful and prosperous.
-BABA
Sandalwood gives more and more fragrance when it is subjected to more and more grinding. The sugarcane yields juice as it is chewed more and more. Gold gets refined when it is melted in the fire. So also, a true devotee will not falter in his love for God even when he faces troubles and obstacles in his life. God tests His devotees only to take them to a higher level on the spiritual ladder.
-BABA
The right attitude of the devotee should be one of total surrender. As one devotee declared, “I am offering to you the heart which you gave me. I have nothing I can call my very own. All are yours. I offer to you what is already yours.” As long as this spirit of total surrender is not developed, man will have to be born again and again. One should offer one's heart to the Divine and not be content with making offerings like flowers and fruits.
-BABA
Giving up the little “I” is what renunciation really means. It means sublimating every thought, word and deed into an offering to God, saturating all acts with divine intent. To cultivate love is the best spiritual discipline. Love gives itself forever; it never asks another to give. Shower it on others and you will be showered in return. Stop sharing love and there will be no more to share. Love thrives on renunciation – indeed, they are inseparable.
-BABA
Who are you? The Atma. From where did you come? From the Atma. Where are you going? To the Atma. How long will you be here? So long as being engaged in sensual pursuits. Where are you? In the unreal and ever-changing world. In what form? As Anatma (that which is not Atma). What are you engaged in? In evanescent tasks. Therefore what should you do hereafter? Give these up and strive to merge with the Atma.
-BABA
Detachment, faith and love – these are the pillars upon which peace rests. Of these, faith is crucial, for without it all spiritual discipline is empty. Detachment alone can make spiritual discipline effective, and love is what leads one quickly to God. Faith feeds the agony of separation from God; detachment canalises it along the path of God, and love lights the way. God will grant you what you need and deserve; there is no need to ask, no reason to grumble. Be content. Nothing can happen against His will.
-BABA
Only by following the path of love can you experience bliss. Just as merely reciting the names of the dishes cannot appease your hunger, so too, unless you speak sweet words and do sacred actions, you cannot enjoy life’s sweetness and be happy. You are all children of immortality and embodiments of bliss. It is because you have emerged from bliss that you seek to return to that Source, the bliss. Just as fish born in water cannot live out of water, so does man always crave for happiness, wherever he is and in whatever he does. Man is restless until he returns to the bliss from whence he emerged. True bliss is not found in this world. Keep your mind always on God – only then will you have peace and happiness.
-BABA
In this worldly life, love is manifesting in several forms such as the love between mother and son, husband and wife, and between relatives. This love based on physical relationships arises out of selfish motives and self-interest. But the love for the Divine is devoid of any trace of self-interest. It is love for the sake of love alone. This is called Bhakti (devotion). One characteristic of this love is to give and not to receive. Secondly, love knows no fear. Thirdly, it is only for love's sake and not for selfish motive. All these three angles of love jointly connote Prapatthi (Surrender). When one revels in this attitude of Prapatthi, one experiences the bliss of the Divine.
-BABA
Man is in search of God and is enquiring into the nature of divinity. When God is within, where is the need to search for Him? Firstly, man should endeavour to understand his true nature which is Sathyam, Jnanam and Anantham (truth, wisdom and infinitude). God has gifted man with the Vedas and other scriptures to open his eyes to the truth that he is essentially divine. In this world, every man is endowed with truth, righteousness and love. Man is the embodiment of Sath, Chith and Ananda (Being-Awareness-Bliss). These attributes are verily divine.
-BABA
What we have to safeguard and protect today are Truth and Righteousness and not the nation. When Truth and Righteousness are protected, they will protect the nation. Hence, righteousness should be fostered in every home. A home is no trivial place, it is the abode of Dharma (Righteousness) which protects and safeguards the country. The home is the beacon which illumines the world and sustains it. Women should realize that, irrespective of their education or position, their foremost obligation is to protect the home. Wherever women are honoured there is prosperity and happiness. Women should never be slighted or treated with disrespect. A home in which a woman sheds tears will be bereft of all prosperity.
-BABA
There is no greater quality in man than selfless love, which expresses itself in service to others. Such love can be the source of real bliss. The relationship between Karma and Karma Yoga should be properly understood. Karma (action) done with attachment or desire causes bondage. But selfless action devoid of desires becomes Karma Yoga (the path of action leading to liberation). Our life should become Yoga (Divine Communion) rather than a Roga (disease).
-BABA
The progress of the universe is interlinked with the progress of man. Any amount of development in scientific, economic and social spheres will not be of much use without mental transformation. How can we bring about this transformation? It is by keeping in check one's passions and emotions. Since mental tension is most detrimental to man's health, man should learn the art of controlling his passions and emotions, which cause stress and strain. Man should make an earnest endeavour to lead a serene and pure life. He should realise the truth that troubles and turmoil are temporary, like passing clouds. There is no scope for agitations to arise if one realises this truth. One who realises this truth will not allow his mind to be swayed by the passions of anger, cruelty, etc.
-BABA
The end of wisdom is freedom. The end of culture is perfection. The end of knowledge is love. The end of education is character. There is a desire on the part of all of us to acquire these four qualities, namely wisdom, culture, education and reach their ends, namely freedom, perfection, love and character. But students should realize that if these qualities are not properly utilised, then they cannot call themselves students. As students and future citizens of this country, you have the responsibility of shaping the future of this country. Put your hearts in the right path by listening attentively to the persons of eminence and experience.
-BAB
Men cannot comprehend the Formless and the Attributeless Absolute. Avatars (Divine Incarnations) appear in human form to enable humanity to experience the Formless in a form which is accessible to them and helpful to them. An Avatar assumes the form that is beneficial to and within the reach of human beings. An effort must be made to understand the nature of divinity. It is only when God comes in human form can human beings have the full opportunity to experience and enjoy the Divine.
One should be constantly contemplating on the principle of Brahma Sathyam, Jagath Mithya (reality of God and impermanence of the world). One must avoid the company of bad people; and even too much friendship with the good. Attachment of this nature will drag one away from the path to God. Give up attachment to the momentary. Once you have achieved this Udaaseenata (attitude of being unaffected), you will have unshakeable Shanti (peace), self-control and purity of mind.
-BABA
What does Ahimsa (non-violence) signify? It is not merely refraining from causing harm to others. It also implies refraining from causing harm to oneself. In the matter of speech, one must examine whether one’s words cause pain to others. One must see that one’s vision is not tainted with evil intentions or thoughts. Nor should one listen to evil talk either. All these things cause harm to a person. Hence one should see to it that one gives no room for bad vision, bad hearing, bad speech, bad thoughts or bad actions. And how do you determine what is bad? By consulting your conscience. Whenever you act against the dictates of your conscience, bad results will follow.
-BABA
Be always saturated with love. Do not use poisonous words against anyone, for words are more fatal than even arrows. Speak softly and sweetly. Sympathise with the suffering and the ignorant. Do your best to apply the salve of soothing words and render timely help. Do not damage anyone’s faith in virtue and Divinity. Encourage others to have that faith by demonstrating in your own life that virtue is its own reward and that Divinity is all-pervasive and all-powerful.
-BABA
When you are confronted with problems and difficulties you should not get upset, and become victims of depression which is a sign of weakness. In such a situation, you should bring tolerance and an attitude of forgiveness into play and should not get agitated giving rise to anger, hatred and revengeful attitude. You are embodiments of strength and not weakness. Therefore, in times of despair, you should be filled with the feeling of forbearance and be ready to forgive and forget. This quality of Kshama (forgiveness) is the greatest power for a human being. If one loses this quality, he becomes demonic.
-BABA
The clouds of Maya (delusion) cannot darken the inner consciousness of the following four categories of noble persons: (1) those who revel in the glory and mystery of God; (2) those who know and make known that God is the master of Maya and the wielder of the forces that destroy delusion; (3) those who are engaged in good deeds executed with faith and devotion; and (4) those who endeavour to maintain Sathya (Truth) and Dharma (Righteousness).
-BABA
What for is man born in this world? Is it merely to roam around and indulge in the pleasures of the world? Understand that worldly pleasures are not permanent. All that happens to you in future will be in accordance with your conduct today. Everything is reaction, reflection and resound. The good deeds that you perform today will yield good results in the time to come. If you do bad deeds today, you cannot expect to be rewarded with good results in future. The results of your past bad deeds will always keep haunting you.

We speak of the sky and the ocean as being blue in colour, but this is incorrect. Neither the sky nor the ocean are actually blue themselves. It is the vastness of space and the depth of the ocean that produces this illusion of blueness. If you take some seawater in your palm, you will see that it is actually colourless. Likewise, good and evil depend on our own thoughts and feelings.
-BABA
The Sadhaka (spiritual aspirant) must have an attitude of fear that the Lord is everywhere and seeing everything, an ever present apprehension that one might slide into sin. He must have a natural bent towards truth and right conduct. He must direct his mind towards the welfare of all mankind. Dharma (righteousness) will shine and illumine only the person who serves all and confers joy on all. Such a person will not only receive the grace of the Lord, but also attain the ultimate goal of merging in Him.
-BABA
During Bhajans, instead of paying great attention to Raaga, Thaala, Laya and Shruti (the melody, the beat, the rhythm and the tone), one should try to elevate the Bhajans to a spiritual level by singing with true feeling and ecstasy of devotion. The songs should flow not from the lips but from the heart. When the songs come from the heart, they will be blissful to the ears also. Conduct your Bhajans with a pure unsullied heart, oblivious to all worldly desires. When you chant the Lord's name with a pure heart, you will experience the Divine.

The mind is sometimes characterized as a snake. This is because it doesn't move straight. It delights in crooked stratagems and clever contrivances. It avoids the straight path of sincerity and veracity. But, the snake mind can be charmed into innocence. When the snake charmer plays on his instrument, the snake sways its hood entranced; so, too the mind will sway with the music that emanates from the recitation of the Name of God!
-BABA

Focus your mind on one goal and do not allow it to waver. You have to hold on to it till the very end. There is only one Divinity. Stick to any one form of God of your choice and hold firm to it. If you keep transplanting a sapling from one place to another frequently, how can it grow into a healthy tree? You have to plant it in one place and water it regularly until it grows into a strong tree. This is true devotion. If you keep changing your spiritual guides frequently, your devotion gets adulterated. Do not resort to such a course. Choose any one, and trust that God is in all.
-BABA
You need not go anywhere searching for God. Divinity is within you. Just as there are many limbs in the body which are kept alive by one heart, the same God is the life-force for all beings. The entire universe is the reflection of the Supreme Being. Dhrishti (vision) determines your view of Shrishti (Creation). When you see the world through coloured glasses, you will see everything in the colour of the glasses you are wearing. Whatever happens, you should take it as a gift of God. Love is God. Live in Love. This is the proper way of worshipping God.
-BABA
Family is the most important functional unit in the world. If the family is running on sound lines, the world will also run smoothly. If the unity among the family members suffers even to a small extent, the world will face the repercussions. Every family should strive for achieving unity and harmonious relationship among its members. There is nothing that cannot be achieved with unity. Take for example, the five fingers in the hand. When the five fingers work together, they can accomplish any task. Share your love with everybody. Love alone confers purity and sacredness to life.
-BABA
It is the sense of duality of 'mine' and 'thine' which accounts for all the joys and sorrows, likes and dislikes experienced by man. This duality is rooted in selfishness, which makes one think that as long as one is alright, it does not matter what happens to the world. Such a self-centred person, who regards his body, his wealth and his family as all that matter to him, is deluded, for he looks upon truth as untruth and the false as true. To get rid of this deep-seated malaise, men have to engage themselves in service. They have to realise that the body has not been given to serve one's own interests but to serve others.
-BABA
What is the purpose of human birth? It is not merely to eat, drink and make merry. Paropakarartham Idam Shariram (human body is meant to serve others). Man should dedicate himself to the service of society. God has endowed man with all powers. But, he is bound by the senses, which lead him to both good and evil ways. Hence, it is the foremost duty of man to make proper use of the senses. One who lacks sense control is worse than an animal. Firstly, one should get rid of one's animal qualities. Only then, can one rise to the level of the Divine.
-BABA
Sound is the first attribute of God. The hymns of the Vedas constitute Naadha Brahman (God in the form of sound), which is highly potent. Even if you cannot chant the Vedas, mere listening to the recitation of the Vedas is itself capable of purifying your mind and elevating you to a higher level. Though the child does not know the meaning of the lullaby sung by its mother, it is induced to sleep hearing the tune. Similarly, listening to the chanting of the Vedas with undivided attention will confer upon you immense benefit. If you ruminate over it and practise its teachings in your life, you can imagine the magnitude of the bliss you will attain.
-BABA
Keep this thought in your mind, "I am not a mere man, I am the embodiment of Divinity." Have this conviction fixed in your mind and you will realise this truth. As it is said, Brahmavid Brahmaiva Bhavathi (the knower of Brahman becomes verily Brahman). If you perceive yourself as Divine, you become Divine. If you consider yourself a human being, you will remain so. While your form is that of a human being, there is the Atmic principle in you. To recognise this Atman, you have to keep your heart pure and empty of negativity.
-BABA
The body and mind are very closely interlinked and are vital to man's evolution. A complete man is one who has both a pure mind and a healthy body. The body must certainly be fostered and protected, but no attachment must be developed towards it. The Atma within the body is more fundamental. While the body is bound to perish sometime, the Atma within is eternal. A healthy body and a pure mind in turn combine to give 'Lavanya' - true beauty. True beauty is that of the character and not of the body. It is this Lavanya that gives one an eternal youthful countenance and bliss.
-BABA
Jnana (knowledge) does not mean mere acquaintance with books. Nor is it worldly knowledge. Only the person who has recognised that the individual is not distinct from the universal is a real Jnani (man of wisdom). True wisdom consists in awareness of the unity of the individual and the Samashti (collective whole). How can a man who is not aware of his humanness recognise the Divinity within himself? Hence the first requisite is the recognition by everyone of his human essence.
-BABA
The pilgrim must traverse and go beyond the vast wastelands of worldly desires, overcome the thick slushy overgrowths of anger and hate, and negotiate the cliffs of ego and malice so that he can relax on the lush green pastures of harmony and love. Having thus become master of his inner foes, he must rest in the silence of his own heart, with all the agitations of his inner realm stilled. When the seeker is fixed thus in the undisturbed calm of his deepest consciousness, the flame of wisdom lights itself. At that moment, the seeker realizes that he is one with Universe, that he is the Indivisible Brahman.
-BAB
He who thinks of the Lord with devotion can overcome any kind of Karma (consequences of past actions). With the grace of the Lord, one can experience even the otherwise unattainable bliss. Do not doubt the usefulness of Sadhana (spiritual exercise). Unshaken Bhakti (devotion) will win the grace of the Lord. If complete faith is placed in the Lord at all times, why should He deny you His grace? Generally men do not fully and unswervingly rely on the Lord. Faith is the product of peace and patience, not of haste and hurry.
-BABA
Deepavali is a festival which is designed to celebrate the suppression of the Ego by the Higher Self. Man is plunged in the darkness of ignorance and has lost the power of discrimination between the permanent and the evanescent. When the darkness of ignorance caused by Ahamkara (ego) is dispelled by the light of Divine knowledge, the effulgence of the Divine is experienced.
-BABA
The rope is mistaken to be a snake and the perceiver flees in fear. This tells us that the eye is but a window through which the soul sees the external world. The soul is the motive force of all the senses. Of what use is the eye, when you do not possess 'Samadrishti'. 'Sama' means Brahman, the Absolute Reality; 'Samadrishti' means seeing only Brahman, the One, in all things at all times. This Ekathwam (Oneness) is the fundamental truth. All other experiences are false. Dwell on that in your meditation. Fix it in your inner consciousness. That is the path of Liberation.
-BABA
If you wish to lead an ideal life, you have to follow the example of the Avatars (Divine incarnations). Avatars may appear in human form, but you should not equate them with ordinary mortals. In physical form, both may appear alike. But there is a fundamental difference. You should not mistake the cotton fruit for the mango. When man strays away from the path of righteousness, God comes in human form to reform him. Birds, beasts and insects lead lives according to their specific nature. It is only man who has given up all righteousness, forgotten his divine essence and degraded his humanness. The Avatar has to protect the good, reform the erring and punish the wicked.
-BABA
Know that Paramatma (God) is the goal of man. Direct all attention to that goal. Control the mind that wanders away from it. This is the essence of the teachings of all the Shastras (scriptures). Be bound to the Atma in you. Take refuge in it. Meditate on it without interruption. Then the worldly bonds would loosen themselves, for the bond with which you attach yourself to the Lord has the power of unbinding all other bonds.
-BABA
When a man's inner self is filled with love, his life becomes full of bliss and he is always hale and hearty. Today, man suffers from numerous ailments the root cause of which is a diseased mind. There is no death for the mind, though when the body is facing death the mind thinks it is dying. The mind, it has been said, is the cause of one's bondage or liberation. Bad thoughts beget bondage. Good thoughts lead to liberation. Hence, everyone should develop good thoughts and perform good deeds. Such good feelings can arise only out of love.
-BABA
God will decide what to give, when to give, and where. Hence, all actions should be dedicated to God, and He will decide what the devotee is fit to receive. When everything is left to God out of pure love and total faith, God will take care of the devotee. People today lack such firm faith. In the path of devotion, many ordeals have to be overcome. Great devotees in the past faced such ordeals with faith and fortitude. Ultimately they secured the grace of the Divine and experienced bliss. For achieving anything in life, two things are essential: firm faith and pure love.
-BABA
The human birth is very difficult to attain. The body is like a caravanserai, the mind is the watchman, and the Jeeva (individual soul) is the pilgrim. And so none of these has any kinship with the others. The pilgrim is bound for the city of salvation, Mokshapuri. For a trouble-free journey, there is nothing as reliable as Namasmarana, the remembrance of the name of the Lord.
-BABA
Wherever there is a vacuum in any heart, love flows into it and is glad that it can fill the emptiness. It is never held back; it is offered in abundance without guile or deceit. It does not wear the cloak of falsehood, flattery or fear. The tendrils of love aspire to cling only to the garments of God. It senses that God resides in all His splendour in every heart. To discover that seat of God is real devotion.
-BABA
Every act done with the consciousness of the body is bound to be egoistic. Selfless service can never be accomplished while being immersed in body consciousness. Consciousness of Deva (God) instead of Deha (body) will bring forth the splendour of Prema (Divine Love) from within the heart. With this idea as the inspiration and guide, man can achieve much good. We must cultivate the attitude that everything is as per God's will, that all is His Leela (Divine sport).
-BABA
You have to develop human values. Without this, you are human merely in form. Man is filled with qualities such as anger, desire, greed, jealousy, etc. These are animal qualities. Anger is the nature of a dog. Wavering mind is the quality of a monkey. You are neither a dog nor a monkey. When you are in a fit of anger, remind yourself that you are not a dog and your anger will diminish. Many animal qualities are rampant in human beings today. What we need to cultivate are the human qualities of compassion, truth, forbearance, empathy, etc.
-BABA
A sincere seeker and devotee can have no interest in the worldly pleasures and passions. These inferior desires have to be renounced, for they lie at the root of all misery. What exactly is Moksha or liberation? It is the Shanti (unruffled peace) obtained through the Sadhana (spiritual endeavour) of Chittha Shuddhi or cleansing of the heart. It is the negation of the impressions one gets through the senses.
-BABA
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The Sadhaka (spiritual aspirant) must be vigilant not to lose his temper on trivial and petty matters, for that will retard his progress. Anger must be sublimated by systematic effort. One must resist the impulse to enter into discussions and arguments, for this breeds a spirit of rivalry and leads one towards feelings of anger and vengeance. Anger is at the root of all wrong behaviour. Hence, cultivate love towards all beings and thus keep undesirable habits and tendencies at bay.
-BABA
When hardships overwhelm you, know that it is the consequence of your own past deeds. Do not blame the Lord and develop a grouse against Him. Do not pay heed to trouble or take it as such. Rather engage yourself in the service of others and perform meritorious deeds. Continue relying on the name of the Lord for support. That is the sign of wisdom.
-BABA
People imagine that spirituality means meditating on God, bathing in sacred waters and visiting holy shrines, but this is not the correct meaning of spirituality. Spirituality means destroying the animal nature in man and awakening him to his divine consciousness. Spirituality implies recognizing that one’s manifold capacities emanate from the Spirit and not from the mind, then utilizing them for achieving spiritual strength. It means acknowledging that all powers come from the Divine.
-BABA
If you win the grace of the Lord, even the decree of destiny can be overcome. When a bottle of medicine is purchased, on the label is a date, printed by the drug manufacturer that indicates its expiration. The drug loses its efficacy beyond that date. Although the drug remains in the bottle, it will no longer be effective. Similarly, the grace of God can work like an expiration date and make the effects of destiny ineffective. God's grace cannot be had by one who is wavering from moment to moment and whose heart is not pure. Even if you do not practise worship or meditation, it is enough if you have cleansed your heart. The Divine will then enter it.
-BABA
Whoever comes seeking service from you is the one you must attend to at that time. It is your duty to satisfy the need of that person through your service, and that will be the best work that you can do that moment. The present, when you can do something, that is the most sacred time. You do not see the future, for your eyes cannot perceive it. The past has gone and there is nothing you can do about it. Thus, the present is the best time in which you can discharge your duty and be of service to the person who comes seeking your help.
-BABA
Goodness, compassion, tolerance – through these virtues one can perceive the Divinity in oneself and in others. Softness of heart is often condemned as weakness, cowardice and want of intelligence; they say that the heart has to be hardened against pity and charity, but that way lies war, destruction and downfall. Love alone confers lasting happiness and peace. Sharing can alone reduce grief and multiply joy. People are born to share, to serve, to give and not to grab.

Illness, both physical and mental, is a reaction on the body caused by poisons in the mind. An uncontaminated mind alone can ensure continuous good health. Vices breed disease. Bad thought, bad habits and bad company are fertile grounds in which disease thrives. A sense of elation and exultation keeps the body free from ill-health. The evil habits in which people indulge, are the chief causes of disease, physical as well as mental. Greed affects the mind; disappointments make people depressed. You can justify your existence as a human being only by the cultivation of virtues. Then you can become a worthy candidate for Godliness. It is progress in virtue that announces the progress of man towards divinity. Virtues also confer freshness, skill and long years of youthfulness. | |
